Breeding Swine
This project is for member’s ages 8-18 years old. This project is designed for those members who want to learn more about the pork industry by starting his/her own herd. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Learn about the pork industry
- How to identify the parts of a hog
- Identify breeds of swine
- Different types of feeds
- Evaluating different swine animals
- Exhibit animal on tour, achievement day or at a fair
- Purchase, feed, and care for animals
- Evaluate project with leader
- Learn about nutritional requirements for swine
- Learn how to manage baby pigs
- Identifying common diseases of swine
- Learn about pork production from farrow to finish
- Gain leadership skills by helping others learn about swine
- Explore career opportunities in the pork industry
- Learn about breeding system
- Design a swine operation
