4-H Weeds Project

This project is designed for the members who are interested in learning more about weed identification and control.

Step 3: Select Your Project

Unit 1 Collection and Identification

This unit is designed for the member who wants to learn how to identify weeds by collecting and mounting weeds. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Start a weed collection
  • Make a plant press
  • Identify, record, and mount weeds collected
  • Exhibit project materials
  • Evaluate project with leader

Unit 2 Growing Habits and Control

This unit is designed for members who want to expand their collection, learn about weed control and how to map for weeds . Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Develop a weed collection
  • Map farm, garden, or home lot and plot weeds present
  • Observe weed control practices
  • Demonstrate or give a talk about a subject related to these goals
  • Exhibit project materials
  • Evaluate project with leader

Unit 3 Noxious Weed Control

This unit is designed for members who have already taken units 1 and 2, emphasis is on noxious and poisonous plants. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Expand weed collection with emphasis on noxious weeds and weeds poisonous to livestock
  • Check mapped area studied in Unit 2 and record changes
  • Conduct a weed control program on lawns, garden, fence row, ditch or field
  • Study three or more herbicides and record recommended use, limitations, and precautions
  • Demonstrate or give a talk
  • Exhibit project materials
  • Evaluate project with leader

Unit 4 Advanced Weeds

This unit is designed for the advanced members who have completed units 1-3 and wish to continue learning about weeds. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Plan a project with the counsel from his parents, leader, county Extension agent, weed supervisor or other resource persons.
  • Continue control programs
  • Conduct result demonstrations
  • Discuss community and county weed control
  • Demonstrate and give talks to public audiences on phases of project
  • Plan and conduct tours or visits to learn or help others learn
  • Work with weed control technologists, plant scientists, or other related career people
  • Evaluate project with leader

Colorado State Fair and Local County Fair Exhibit Requirements:

General Exhibit Requirements:

Unit 1 Collection and Identification

Exhibit will consist of the following:

  1. A completed e-Record and manual with completed Weed Project Log on page 12 presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
  2. Home-made plant press.
  3. A collection of 15 plant specimens from any of the lists in Appendix A. Include part of the root, stem, leaves, and flowers. Mounted on 11 ½” x 16 ½” cardboard, properly labeled, dated and classified according to common and scientific name. Mounts are to be bound together in book fashion.
  4. Project will be evaluated on the quailty of information completed in manual and e-record (25 percent) and quality of exhibit (75 percent).

Unit 2 Growing Habits and Control

Exhibit will consist of the following:

  1. Your completed manual, e-record, including present and previous weed records, weed control and completed map presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
  2. Present only your current year’s collection of at least 10 new weeds, mounted on 11 ½” x 16 ½” cardboard, properly labeled, dated and classified. (Mounts are to be bound together in book fashion.)
  3. Project will be evaluated on quality of information completed in manual and e-record (25 percent) and quality of exhibit (75 percent).

Unit 3 Noxious Weed Control

Exhibit will consist of the following:

  1. Your completed manual and e-record including present and previous weed records plus report on three herbicides and weed control presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
  2. Your current year’s weed collection, including at least five noxious and five poisonous weeds, mounted, properly identified and dated. Bind together in book fashion.
  3. Project will be evaluated on the quality of information completed in manual and e-record (25 percent) and quality of exhibit (75 percent).

Unit 4 Advanced Weeds

Exhibits will consist of the following:

  1. Completed the Weeds e-record with emphasis on your accomplishments in your story presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
  2. Include the following information on the specific project information page in the Weeds e-Record.
    a. goals
    b. plans
    c. accomplishments
    d. evaluation
  3. Exhibit as appropriate for your advanced project.
  4. Project will be evaluated on the quality of information completed in manual and e-record (25 percent) and quality of exhibit (75 percent).
