This unit is for member’s ages 8-10. In this project, you will learn how to express your individualism and imagination by creating a “one-of-a-kind” garment. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Experiment with a variety of textile crafts
- Use different ideas and tools to create or modify a design
- Decorate a garment of your choice, such as a t-shirt, pants, jacket, blouse/shirt, etc.
- Exhibit Options—you may exhibit your garment in one of four classes based on the method used to create the design.
* Applied ---Decoration is attached by gluing, fusing or painting. Examples include: jewels, puff paints, appliqué, tie-dyed
* Stitched---Decorations may be hand or machine stitched. Examples: appliqué where satin stitch, etc., is used embroidery, quilting, beading or knitting or crochet (by self or others).
* Combination—Decoration includes a significant amount (minimum of 30 percent each) from two or more categories. Examples: stitched and applied, fabric reconstruction and applied or fabric reconstruction and stitched. - Project Requirements:
* Decorate (embellish) one to three coordinated garments that illustrates what you learned
* Do a demonstration/show-and-tell related to this project
* Do a project related community service activity

Colorado State Fair and Local County Fair Exhibit Requirements
Project Exhibit Rules for All Units
Project Exhibit Rules:
- Requirement: All exhibit garments must be labeled with name, age, and county and unit of the 4-H member. Labels must be attached at the inside of the neckline or at the waistband of skirts and pants. Information must be written on a label and securely attached to garment or article. This will assist in case of property loss.
- Garments may be worn before exhibiting but should be in good, clean condition.
- An exhibit shall consist of no more than three coordinated pieces. (No accessory items, i.e. shoes, jewelry, hats, etc.)
- Pattern “instruction sheet” is required (if one was used) and must be attached securely to the e-record in a sturdy binder/notebook. Do not use covers that are clear plastic with sliders.
- Members are encouraged to select a unit that challenges their skills. All units will be judged on required skills included in the manual.
- Note: All Colorado State Fair silk items or garments will be displayed only with “permission to display” form which acknowledges possible fading caused by state fair display lighting. Permission to display form is available at the Extension offices.

Applied
Exhibit will consist of the following:
- Completed e-Record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook. Include in the project story where you got the idea for your project, what you liked best about the project, what you would change, how to clean your project, how the item be used and if you recycled or reused any fabric or other materials for your project. If a pattern was used, please include the pattern instruction sheet.
- Provide a list of the garments that your have decorated this year in the e-Record on the Specific Project Information page. Also include a description of the steps in order of application (including product name and numbers, etc.) for your exhibit item on this page.
- Up to three coordinated wearable garments (no accessory items, i.e. shoes, jewelry, etc.). Decoration is attached by gluing, fusing or painting. Examples: jewels, puff paints, appliqués, tie-dye.
Stitched
Exhibit will consist of the following:
- Completed e-Record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook. Include in the project story where you got the idea for your project, what you liked best about the project, what you would change, how to clean your project, how the item be used and if you recycled or reused any fabric or other materials for your project. If a pattern was used, please include the pattern instruction sheet.
- Provide a list of the garments that you have decorated this year in the e-Record on the Specific Project Information page. Also include a description of the steps in order of application (including product name and numbers, etc.) for your exhibit item on this page.
