This unit is for member’s ages 8-18. In this project, you will have the opportunity to create fun sewing projects to use for gifts, special occasions or a home-based business. You can make costumes for puppets, accessories, toys, stuffed animals, book bags, sleeping bags, etc. Any project which would not be exhibited as a home environment or other wearable clothing project (i.e., garments) may be made in this unit. Creativity is the key! Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Select a project in which you have special interest or need. Research to find information, special fabrics, or patterns. Check with your local library, friends, leaders, parents to Extension agent for resource ideas.
  • You will need to sew the majority of or all of the exhibit project.
  • Learn new skills by setting more advanced goals for yourself by trying new techniques
  • Consider safety when constructing a project that is to be used by children.

Project Requirements:

  • Construct an item/piece that represents your 4-H project experiences
  • Do a demonstration/show and tell related to this project
  • Do a project related community service activity

General Exhibit Requirements:

Project Exhibit Rules for All Units

Project Exhibit Rules:

  • Requirement: All exhibit garments must be labeled with name, age, and county and unit of the 4-H member. Labels must be attached at the inside of the neckline or at the waistband of skirts and pants. Information must be written on a label and securely attached to garment or article. This will assist in case of property loss.
  • Garments may be worn before exhibiting but should be in good, clean condition.
  • An exhibit shall consist of no more than three coordinated pieces. (No accessory items, i.e. shoes, jewelry, hats, etc.)
  • Pattern “instruction sheet” is required (if one was used) and must be attached securely to the e-record in a sturdy binder/notebook. Do not use covers that are clear plastic with sliders.
  • Members are encouraged to select a unit that challenges their skills. All units will be judged on required skills included in the manual.
  • Note: All Colorado State Fair silk items or garments will be displayed only with “permission to display” form which acknowledges possible fading caused by state fair display lighting. Permission to display form is available at the Extension offices.

Exhibit will consist of the following:

  1. Completed e-Record with a description of what was done presented in a sturdy binder/notebook. Include in the project story where you got the idea for your project, what you liked best about the project, what you would like to change, how the item will be used and if you recycled or reused any fabric or other materials for your project. If a pattern was used, please include the pattern instruction sheet.
  2. Provide a list of the garments that you have decorated this year in the e-Record on the Specific Project Information page. Also include a description of the steps in order of application (including product name and numbers, etc.) for your exhibit item on this page.
  3. One to three coordinated items illustrating what was learned (costumes, puppets, accessories, toys, stuffed animals, book bags, sleeping bags, etc.).

Note: Small items such as accessories and small doll clothes are to be displayed on a display board.
