4-H Foundation to Raffle Ford Truck

The Rocky Mountain Ford Stores recently donated a 2008 Ford XLT F150 4x4 pickup truck to the Colorado 4-H Foundation to help raise funds for 4-H. Raffle tickets will be sold for the next six months by Foundation board members, Extension staff and 4-H members and leaders. The drawing will be held at the Metro Area Support 4-H (M*A*S*H) Gala being held Oct. 11, 2008 at the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver.

Raffle tickets are just $20 a piece. Five dollars from each ticket will be returned to the county 4 H program or state 4-H project area responsible for the sale. The remaining funds will be used to fund special projects for county and state 4-H programs through a RFP (Request for Funds) process.

We would like to have the Ford truck on display in as many counties as possible in the next six months. A sign up list with a tentative schedule was circulated at the 4-H CCA meeting last week at Snow Mountain Ranch. If you missed signing up, please send your requested dates to me at gary.small@colostate.edu or call 970.491.1537.

We hope to have the truck travel schedule, raffle tickets, guidelines and posters mailed to county offices by the last week in March. Thank you for raising the green backs for 4-H by “Going Green with Ford and 4-H!”— Gary Small

2008 Colorado Earth Day Forum: Connecting Kids to Nature.

The National Wildlife Federation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cordially invite you to participate in The 2008 Colorado Earth Day Forum: Connecting Kids to Nature.

In his book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, Richard Louv reported a growing concern of parents, educators and physicians: Children aren't playing outside much anymore- not even in the back garden or the neighborhood park.

This disconnect between children and nature has a profound impact on our children's physical and mental health and sense of environmental stewardship. In the last 20 years, while time spent playing outdoors has been cut in half, childhood obesity has more than doubled and adolescent obesity has tripled. Research has linked this obesity epidemic to a lack of playtime outdoors. The cost of this childhood obesity could top $100 billion annually to our public health systems.

Experts representing children's health, outdoor businesses, conservation, education, and government agencies are among the many leaders that will join together Earth Day 2008 to begin addressing this challenge and its solutions in Colorado.

The day will feature a keynote speaker and panel of experts setting the stage for understanding and exploring solutions to the disconnect Colorado children have with nature.

Confirmed panelists include: Dr. Sandy Stenmark, Pediatrician, Director of Pediatric Weight Management Programs, Kaiser Permanente and Dr. Louise Chawla, University of Colorado leading researcher on Connecting Kids to Nature. Other panelists will represent business, government and education communities.

Afternoon work sessions will allow participants to engage in meaningful small group sessions focused on identifying strategies and next steps to take to Connect Colorado's Children to Nature.
