Gary Small Named as Colorado 4-H Foundation Executive Director

The Colorado 4-H Foundation is pleased to announce their new Executive Director, Gary Small. Gary has served as a county Extension agent for 28 years, the last 10 years as a 4-H agent in Larimer County. Small brings experience in grant writing, procurement of gifts to support educational programs as well as extensive background in volunteer and event management. He was instrumental in the acquisition of gifts and donations that helped equip and furnish the new McKee 4-H building at the Larimer County Fairgrounds.

Prior to his assignment with Colorado Extension, he was a 4-H agent in Wyoming from 1979-1996. During his tenure with Wyoming Extension Gary was involved with the Wyoming 4-H Foundation and assisted in their fund raising events.

In the course of his service as a county Extension agent Small has raised nearly $800,000 in grants, gifts, and donations to support his 4-H programming efforts. Colorado 4-H looks forward to the expansion of 4H programming and support of existing efforts under the Colorado 4-H Foundation’s direction by Gary Small.

Please join us in welcoming Gary to our 4-H team! — Jeff Goodwin

Sesame Workshop Expands Military Families Initiative

With more than 700,000 children of military families under the age of five separated from their mother or father this holiday season Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, has responded with a program geared to address the challenges military families face with deployment. The half-hour television special, entitled When Parents are Deployed, will be hosted by Academy Award winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr., premiering Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. MT on PBS. — Jan Carroll

4-H Foundation Fund Raising Opportunity

What do you get the golfer in your family for Christmas? The Colorado 4-H Foundation has an opportunity to receive $5 for each Samnic golf shoe spike cleaner that is sold before Christmas. This machine deep-cleans hard-to-get-areas under cleats, can be used on or off the course, reduces slippage while swinging, is easy to use and includes a bonus brush. The Samnic costs $19.95 plus $5.95 for shipping and handling and can be ordered from the following website http://samnic.com. Colorado State University Extension and the 4-H Foundation do not endorse this product or any product. A special thank you goes to Bill Black, president of Samnic for making this fund raising opportunity available. Please share this information with your clientele and help the Foundation raise funds to support our 4-H youth. — Gary Small

Fundraising Opportunity with Charlotte’s Web

Here’s more information about the exciting fundraising opportunity 4-H has developed in conjunction with the live-action movie Charlotte’s Web coming to theatres nationwide Dec. 15.

First, I want to thank you for your enthusiastic support of the 4-H Charlotte’s Web fundraising opportunity! I want to share with you some ideas for promotion, and let you know that the ticket sales Web site is now available! For every ticket purchased to see Paramount Pictures and Walden Media's production of Charlotte's Web through www.fourhcouncil.edu, a donation of $1 will be made by Hollywood Movie Money to 4-H to support your state's 4-H program. Charlotte’s Web features the 4-H Emblem multiple times, and the themes portrayed speak directly to the great work that 4-H does in developing youth – building friendships, commitment to goals and having fun! It stars Dakota Fanning as Fern, and the voices of Julia Roberts and 4-H alumnus Reba McEntire, as well as many other noteworthy actors.

Some of you have asked how you can help spread the word. Here are a few ideas:

I’ve included links necessary to carry out each of the ideas listed above. You can download these items and other items to help promote the opportunity at http://www.4-hbrandnetwork.org/charlottesweb.

My sincere thanks for your support! — Donald T. Floyd, Jr., President and CEO, National 4-H Council
