Applicants must plan to garden in 2007 with at least 15 children between the ages of three and 18 years. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply must wait one year and have significantly expanded their garden programs. Applicants should demonstrate a child-centered plan that emphasizes children/youth learning and working in an outdoor garden. Areas considered for support include educational, environmental, or social programming; leadership; community support; sustainability; innovation, and need. Each winning program will receive educational materials. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2006. Please click here for further information. — Ellen Butler

New Contest Offered at State Conference

There is a new contest that will be held during State 4-H Conference. It’s called Consumer Bowl. This is a team competition with four team members and is run similar to College Bowl. The questions are consumer-based and cover large areas like Colorado Fact Sheets, Consumer Bowl Question Bank, project areas, etc. The winning team will be eligible to compete at Western 4-H Roundup. This contest will take place after the Consumer Choices contest. Team members do not have to compete in Consumer Choices in order to compete in the Consumer Bowl. A county can have two separate teams or the same team, whichever works best for the county. You will be able to enter a team for the Consumer Bowl on the State Conference registration.

Remember that the Consumer Bowl is a team competition and you will need to have four team members in order to compete.
If you can’t get a team together this year you are invited to come and watch this new contest so that next year you might be able to have a team compete.

Attached are the Consumer Bowl Contest Rules and Consumer Bowl Question Bank. We are excited about being able to bring this contest to State Conference. — Connie Cecil

Outstanding Volunteer Award Nomination

Each year the Colorado State 4-H Leaders’ Council recognizes an outstanding leader with 15 or more years of experience. There have been very limited applications these past few years and we hope to remedy that problem this year. The Council is well aware that there are many impressive leaders who fall in this category, yet are not nominated by their peers. This award may be presented to an individual or a couple. Selection is based on a zeal for 4-H via their involvement at the county, district and state levels. The nomination form can be found here.

A committee formed of District Leader Presidents and the Leader Council officers will review the nominations. The selected leader will be recognized at the formal banquet on Thursday evening of State Conference in June. This winner will be presented with a plaque in gratitude for his/her service to 4-H. Please encourage leaders and/or agents in your county to fill out the nomination forms for these deserving volunteers. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the state president at maureenbergenfeld@elpasoco.com. — Maureen Bergenfeld

Invitation to Attend Leaders’ Council Meeting

All leaders and chaperons are encouraged to attend the State 4-H Leaders’ Council meeting which will be held on CSU campus during State 4-H Conference on Wednesday, June 22, at 3:00 p.m. We would like your input on what your needs are within your county, what kind of training you would like, etc. Hope to see you there! — Maureen Bergenfeld
